Start with D-1 base course, the local base grading. Glacial outwash gravel under the city takes water fast, which changes what belongs under a patio.

Ground and Conditions in Anchorage

Across the Cook Inlet basin, from the Anchorage bowl to the Kenai, the ground comes in two layers that behave in opposite ways. Coarse outwash sand and gravel sits at the surface over silty clay and clayey silt.

Water drops through the gravel until it hits the clay, then it stops. Low ground and the toes of slopes hold that water, and breakup delivers a winter of snow onto ground that is still partly frozen.

A thin base shows the problem first. Bedding laid too shallow over wet clay pumps, shifts and leaves pavers rocking within a season.

The answer is a thicker compacted layer under the bedding, built once the ground has thawed and dried. Thawing ground in April will not compact, and neither will the clay once it is wet.

Anchorage publishes 42 inches for a warm foundation and 60 inches for a cold one in its local amendments to the residential code. Long shoulder seasons at each end cycle the ground through freeze and thaw.

Materials for Anchorage Projects

Bedding under pavers and flatwork is where a patio is won or lost. The layers below the bedding carry the load; the bedding only sets the surface true.

Start with D-1 base course. It goes under driveways, parking pads, shed and building pads, and the compacted layer under flatwork.

C-1 is the coarser grading where a deeper structural layer is wanted.

Below that, Pit Run builds up low ground and raises a pad before a base course goes over it. Pit run is unscreened gravel as it comes out of the pit, not a crushed product.

For the setting bed itself, Mason Sand is the finest washed sand, for mortar, brick and block work and for a smooth paver setting bed. Screened Sand covers bedding under pipe and flatwork and backfill where a clean fine material is wanted.

Finer still, Stone Screenings are the crusher fines that pass the finest screen, a bedding and joint material under pavers and a packing top for a path.

Where water has to move, Drain Rock is clean washed stone with the fines taken out, for French drains, foundation perimeter drains, drywells and downspout runs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Anchorage, AK

What gravel is best for a driveway in Anchorage?

Start with D-1 base course. Top it with 3/4 inch crushed stone or driveway gravel for the driving surface. Over the silty clay under much of the Anchorage bowl, water stops where the gravel meets the clay, so a drive built too thin heaves and ruts.

How much material will my project need?

Quantities are ordered by the ton or by the yard. Each product page has a calculator to help you size the load for your area and depth. Order that quantity online and pick a delivery date at checkout.

Where will the material be placed?

Wherever you tell us, as long as the truck can safely reach it. Mark the spot before the delivery and someone should be on site to point the driver to it. If nobody can be there, leave clear instructions when you order and we will follow them.
