One cubic yard fills a cube measuring 3 x 3 x 3 feet. We sell bulk materials by cubic yard or ton, so ordering starts with turning the project area into one of those measures. These calculators make that conversion for 24 stocked products using each product's actual cubic-yard weight. Shredded mulch is about 600 lb per yard, while crusher run is 3,000 lb. The cubes are equal in size, but crusher run is five times heavier. A general aggregate calculator can miss that tonnage difference; a product-based calculator accounts for it.

Calculation method

First, multiply the length and width in feet. Multiply that result by the depth in feet, found by dividing inches by 12, to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Then apply the material density to find tons. That is the same calculation used when project measurements are called in.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

Most estimate errors come from the depth, not the area. For example, a 10 x 10 patio with 2 inches of stone takes half the material needed for that patio at 4 inches. If you are not sure on depth, check the project guidance on the material page first.

Find the right material

  • For a new driveway or parking pad, figure the crusher run or road base below separately from the driveway gravel or #57 stone above. Use two calculators, one for each layer.
  • For standing water, a wet trench, or a French drain, plan on clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or more.
  • Put shredded mulch in planting areas. Choose river rock for borders that are not regularly refreshed.
  • For a bare or sparse lawn, place 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before laying seed or sod.
  • Fill dirt is used to raise grade or fill low spots. Use topsoil only for the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • A paver patio needs a compacted base beneath a strict 1 inch layer of bedding sand. Calculate those layers separately with the Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators.
  • Playground fall zones need pea gravel maintained at 9 to 12 inches deep.
  • Where a bank or shoreline is washing away, place riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Ordering questions

Which calculator do I need?
Pick the calculator for the material being ordered because it uses that material's actual weight. If comparing pea gravel and river rock on the same path, enter the same dimensions in each. Volume is unchanged, but tonnage and price differ.
Should I buy cubic yards or tons?
Use the selling unit shown on the product page. Gravel and stone are priced by ton; mulch and soils are priced by yard. Every calculator displays both amounts, with no manual conversion needed.
How close are calculator estimates?
The calculation is exact, but site conditions are not. Moisture, compaction, and an uneven subgrade can shift the amount required by about 10-15%, so results are presented as a range. Crushed materials include a small default extra allowance. Measure carefully to stay within the range.
Can one delivery include multiple materials?
Yes. Run separate calculations for base stone and surface gravel, fill dirt and topsoil, or mulch and edging rock, then add the products to one order. Delivery remains free.
Are all calculator materials for sale?
Yes, all 24 materials are covered. Results link to the applicable product page with the calculated quantity.
