Crusher run calculator for Alaska
A pavement-style base layer figured at its final compacted thickness, not as loose material.
Enter your project dimensions
After compaction, crusher run tightens by 10-15% from its loose truck condition. Ordering only to the measured depth can leave the finished base half an inch short, so the calculator has a +10% allowance turned on. This material may be listed as Pit Run, bank run, unscreened gravel in Alaska, or 2 inch minus on some tickets. Each name describes crushed stone with fines included, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, that compacts into a firm surface under tires.
Order for compacted depth
- Find the footprint in feet. Multiply lane length by width, or measure the pad dimensions.
- Choose the required finished compacted depth: 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 for trucks.
- For yards, divide cubic feet by 27. Multiply that result by 1.5 for tons, and leave the +10% selected. Specifications list the depth after rolling.
Tons of coverage
| Compacted depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 108 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 54 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 36 sq ft |
| 8 inches | 41 sq ft | ≈ 27 sq ft |
Best uses and limits
- For driveway bases, use 4-6 inches after compaction. Add 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel as the driving surface.
- Budget rural lanes can use crusher run as the driving layer. Plan for summer dust and regrading every 2-4 years.
- Paver and slab bases use 4 inches compacted in 2-inch lifts. The Paver Base Calculator covers the complete paver stack.
- Use 4 inches for shed and hot-tub pads over stripped ground, or 6 on soft soil.
- Keep it out of French drains. The fines help it bind but also retain water. Use clean #57 or drain rock for drainage.
Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad
For 200 square feet at a compacted 4 inches, calculate 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. Order 4 tons to cover the allowance. Place and compact half the material, then place and compact the remainder. Two 2-inch lifts hold up longer than a single 4-inch layer. During breakup season, use a plate compactor to help limit ruts.
Delivery guidance
- Have the base and surface stone delivered together to keep the project timeline moving. Delivery is free either way.
- Dump at the far end first, then work back toward the pile. On large pads, working downhill instead of uphill saves a full day.
- Lightly mist each lift before compaction. Moist crusher run packs tighter than dry material.
- Set aside a wheelbarrow-load for later. The material also works for pothole patches, and repairs will be needed.
Pricing details
Crusher run is made from crusher output rather than washed, sorted stone. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance can avoid a separate half-ton delivery. Check the Crusher Run product page for the per-ton price, compare Road Base, and order both driveway layers in one free delivery.
